Books & Author Spotlight - The Lux Seekers by Willow A. Renner

THE SEEKER MUST AWAKEN
Book 1 in The Lux Seekers series
YA fantasy

A ding announced the arrival of the elevator car.

Alexa entered, pushed the Lobby button, then walked to the back of the car and leaned against the wall. Green Day’s Boulevard of Broken Dreams streamed out of the speakers. Alexa grimaced. It should be illegal to turn cool songs into Musak!”
The elevator stopped at the next floor. Someone got on, but Alexa was too distracted by her note to notice. As the doors closed, she heard a familiar voice ask, “Going down?”
Alexa’s head snapped up as she looked into the cool blue eyes of the woman who had been haunting her nightmares for years. Sorcha? This cant be happening. Shes not real.
“Oh, but I am, sweetness.”
Alexa gasped. “How did you—?”

“Know what you were thinking?” Sorcha laughed. “It’s one of my talents.” Her blood red lips dipped into a frown. “I’ll take that note now.”
Alexa shoved it back into her pocket as Sorcha grabbed for her other wrist.
Sorchas blue eyes turned black as she squeezed. We can do this the easy way or the hard way.”
Alexa shook her head. “This isn’t happening. This is just a dream.”
Sorcha gave a grim laugh. “Silly girl. When will you learn that dreams are a powerful portal to other realms? Lucky for me, you are too thick to understand what Nox was trying to tell you.” She squeezed Alexa’s wrist harder. “Now, give me the note.”
Alexa jerked her arm away from Sorcha. “No! I’m not afraid of you.”
Sorcha sighed. You mortals are always so predictable. You think your logic can save you.” She snapped her fingers and the lights in the elevator car dimmed as the car jerked to a halt. You’re in my world now.”
Sorcha advanced on Alexa. You still dont get it, do you? You will never be free of me, until you give me what I came for. I will always find you and I will never stop.”
Alexa’s back hit the wall of the elevator car as she ran out of room trying to evade Sorcha. “What do you want from me?”
Your Donnii power. It is rightfully mine. I spent years of my life being a mother to you. I demand payment.” Sorcha put her hands to Alexa’s throat and began to squeeze. “See what you’re making me do?”
Alexa clawed at Sorcha’s fingers, trying to break free. The lights dimmed further as Sorcha continued to squeeze. Alexa felt her eyes begin to bulge and she saw bursts of white light explode before her eyes. She felt her strength leave her as her arms hung uselessly to her sides.
Alexa felt like she was falling into a void. The blackness was rushing forward to swallow her whole. Very faintly, she heard Quinns voice calling to her. The Seeker must awaken. Its time to wake up, now. Hurry, Alexa! Wake up!”

BOOK OF SHADOWS
Book 2 in The Lux Seekers series
YA fantasy

Alexa had researched the best time to do the love spell right down to the day and hour: February 14 at 2:00 p.m. Unfortunately, that time was right in the middle of her spellcasting class. Well, it’s now or never. While Professor Xanthus was preoccupied with reprimanding a student for forgetting his homework, Alexa opened the forbidden spell book at the bookmark and whispered the incantation.
“Come now to me my love, Flying swift on wings of a dove.
I am the one, your heart’s desire, Flames of passion, burning fire. Your love, your will, never set free, Pledge your devotion, abide in me.
As I will it, so mote it be.”

The book released a cloud of thick black smoke. Alexa coughed and frantically waved her hands to clear the air. What went wrong? Were my calculations off? Maybe Venus was in retrograde.

Alexa heard gasps of shock from her startled classmates.

When the smoke cleared, Professor Xanthus was standing in front of her desk. “What is going on, Miss O’Brian?”

Alexa opened her mouth to lie, but what came out was:
“Heart and soul I pledge to thee,
Forever binding, never set me free.
Lost all reason and will,
Devotion I place on you until,
My heart to yours and hand in hand,
By your side I vow to stand.”

She could hear snickering from the back of the classroom.

The professor snatched the spell book off Alexa’s desk and took it to the front of the classroom. “ Of Destiny and Desire is not an Academy-approved spell book. Explain yourself.”

Alexa had no intention of saying anything, but the words tumbled out:
“Pledging devotion is but a curse, Now I can only speak in verse.”

Ah, a love spell gone wrong. And now it has rebounded on you. Karma is a funny thing, is it not? Now, tell me who it was meant for.”

I’d rather set my hair on fire than admit it was for Quinn. Once again, the words came forth:
“Silence now would serve me well.
Though I know, I’ll never tell.”

More giggling now was heard throughout the classroom.

“Excuse me?” Professor Xanthus sputtered. “You will tell me right this instant, young lady!”

Alexa clenched her teeth, trying with all her might to remain silent. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be.
“No pain, no torture can make me tell, You’ll have to send me straight to Hell.”

She clamped a hand over her mouth, but it was too late.

Professor Xanthus’s face clouded with rage. “Come with me, Miss O’Brian. Hell won’t be necessary. But you’ll not like where I’m taking you. What do you students call it?” He paused for effect. “Purgatory?”
